Susan Shelby Borchers was received with sounding trumpets, glorious light, and the warm embrace of our loving Lord and all His glorious angels on July 2, 2015. Born in Winnsboro, Texas, on November 22, 1937, she attended Houston Community College and worked in the Department of Epidemiology at M.D. Anderson. She met and married native Laredoan Elmore H. Borchers, Jr. on July 22, 1961. She was a dedicated employee of Laredo National Bank for over 38 years. Susan was blessed with four wonderful children for whom she lovingly sewed clothing throughout their youth. Ever the green thumb, she nurtured and maintained a beautiful garden of roses, daffodils, and lush greenery. She consistently wowed family and friends with her culinary skills and spent endless hours baking assorted pastries and meals to the sounds of her favorite music. These gastronomical delights kept her children's friends close as they sat around her kitchen table alternately laughing, telling stories, and seeking her advice all while devouring every available morsel of Susan's treats. Her home was their home away from home and she lovingly doled out humor, compassion, wisdom and counsel to them all. Such was the draw of Susan's compassionate care that she was immediately considered a second mother by all these friends who called her both 'Mom' and 'Momma B.' She was a passionate reader, enjoyed listening to all sorts of music, and thoroughly enjoyed putting jigsaw puzzles together. Her sharp wit and intelligence made her a force to reckon with when playing bridge. At the drop of a hat, she would pile as many children in the car as she could and would head to her favorite relaxation destinations in the Texas Hill Country and the coast--places at which she always felt at peace. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mack and Mary Blanche Shelby; her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Elmore Herman Borchers, Sr.; her daughter Corinne Marie; her brother-in-law Charles Robert Borchers; and her siblings, Jim Shelby and Blix Shelby. She is survived by her brothers, Jerry Shelby and Bran Shelby; her children, Charles Brann, Denise Angela and Davyne Shelby; grandchildren, Corrine Katherine, Jordan Nicole, Lauren Shelby, Elysse Judith and Anneka Amelie, and sons-in-law, Gilbert Leyendecker and Mario Aguero. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives, as well as many devoted friends, such as Olga Flores, a.k.a. 'My good friend Olga,' who was with Susan until her last breath. Visitation will be held Monday morning, July 6, 2015 at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring at Cortez from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Procession will depart the funeral home at 10:40 a.m. to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the family plot in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
