ROGELIO “GELO” CANIZALES
December 16, 1939 -March 16, 2017
Rogelio “Gelo” Canizales entered eternal rest at the age of 77 on Thursday, March 16, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. Rogelio was born on December 16, 1939 in Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Florencio and Esperanza Canizales. His three greatest passions were spending time with family, travelling and art.
Rogelio enjoyed spending holidays, graduations, and other special occasions in the presence of his family. He was extremely proud of his many nieces and nephews and adorned his house with pictures of them and their accomplishments.
When not spending time with family or working on his art, Rogelio liked traveling abroad. He was captivated by the world’s cultural diversity and scenic beauty.
Rogelio was an artist who saw life as a blank canvas waiting to be painted. His love and devotion for art allowed him to become one of San Antonio’s most recognized artists. Some of his art work includes murals and paintings in downtown San Antonio. One of his proudest moments was receiving special acknowledgment for serving as Art and Design Director for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Texas and San Antonio in September of 1987. Prior to his passing, Rogelio was in the process of organizing an art exhibit of his canvas paintings.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Florencio and Esperanza Canizales, sisters; Elvira Ortiz and Juanita Ramirez, brother; Raul Canizales, nephews; Eric Ramirez and Gil Ortiz, Jr. and brother-in-law; Valeriano Arriaga Jr.
Left to cherish his memory are his siblings; Robert (Francisca) Canizales, Florencio (Estela) Canizales, Jr., Esperanza (Valeriano Jr.†) Arriaga, Diana Reyes, Amparo Canizales, Jose Angel Canizales, Eva (Joey) Hayes, and Dr. Sara (Ricardo) Campos, along with numerous loving nephews and nieces.
The family will gather to celebrate his life Friday, March 24, 2017 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels and Cremation Services, 1410 Jacaman Road; where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
