REFUGIO GUERRA, JR.
January 31, 1921- April 27, 2021
Refugio Guerra, Jr., 100, joined our Lord in His heavenly kingdom on Tuesday, April 27, 2021.
Refugio Guerra, Jr was born on January 31, 1921 in Laredo, Texas to Refugio & Maria Antonia Decker Guerra. Refugio went to school in Laredo, Texas and graduated from Martin High School in 1942. Refugio met and married the love of his life, Martha Barrientos Guerra who together shared 66 loving years. God blessed them with two sons, the late Luis M. Guerra and surviving son Samuel J. Guerra. He entered into the service of the United States Army on October 2, 1942 until December 1, 1945. Refugio was one of the soldiers who loaded up the Atomic bomb on to the Enola Gay B-29 bomber at approximately 2:45 a.m. from the Tinian Island. which was dropped on August 6, 1945 on Hiroshima, Japan as part of the United States response to the attacks on Pearl Harbor during World War II. We all knew him as Little Boy. Refugio was the lone survivor of eight siblings: two sisters and six brothers who also served their country proudly. Upon his return from World War II and upon his Honorable Discharge, he worked for the United States Postal Service for 42 years until his retirement on November 30, 1986. His legacy will be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife: Martha B. Guerra; son Luis Marti Guerra; granddaughter, Lori M. Guerra; parents; Refugio Sr. and Maria Guerra; siblings: Mary Louise Mendiola, Luis Guerra, Ralph Guerra, Guadalupe Guerra, Carlos Guerra, Jose M. Guerra, and Rose Marie Wilmes.
Left to cherish his memory is his son Samuel J. (Maricela) Guerra, 6 grandchildren; Heather G. Perez, Ian Guerra, Amber Guerra Garcia, Haley Guerra Cortez, Samuel J. Guerra, Jr. Cameron Guerra, 4 great-grandchildren as well as numerous loving family and friends.
The family will be receiving condolences on Monday, May 03, 2021 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapel & Cremation Services, 1410 Jacaman Rd.; where a Vigil for the Deceased and Rosary will commence at 7 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday morning, May 04, 2021 departing at 9 a.m. from Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels to San Martin de Porres Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m.
Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
