Pedro Treviño, Jr.
April 15, 1932 – March 28, 2018

On March 28, 2018, Pedro (Pete) Treviño, Jr. peacefully passed away. He led a full and happy life and was surrounded with those he loved and those that loved him.

He was preceded in death by his son, Gerardo Rene Treviño, his parents Pedro and Luisa Treviño, his parents-in-law, Jose B. and Elvira G. Gonzalez, his brother Alberto Treviño, brother in-law Jose Manuel and Dorothy Gonzalez, his nephew Peter Villanueva, and his niece Kristina Renee Gonzalez Guerra.

Almost 86 years ago, Pete was born on a ranch in Jim Wells County to Pedro and Luisa Treviño. He lived there with his siblings, Alberto (deceased) and Belia. At the age of five, Pete and his siblings lost their mother and moved from "El Tordillo" Ranch to Laredo where they were cared for by their aunt, Inocente Treviño (deceased). They experienced difficult times growing up, but learned the value of having a strong work ethic as Pete and his brother Beto shined shoes to earn spending money.

Pete is a direct descendant of Jose Vasquez Borrego who was given a land grant in the 1700’s by the King of Spain to establish townships. Vasquez Borrego moved families to the “Nuestra Señora de Dolores Hacienda” (the oldest Spanish settlement north of the Rio Grande). This area now encompasses Zapata and Webb counties. Pete’s family heritage can be traced to the founders of Laredo.

Pete acquired a love for photography and worked with Tony Valdez (deceased) at his photography Studio. He often shared warm thoughts about Mr. Valdez and all the life lessons he learned while working for him until his graduation from Martin High School in 1951. Soon after graduation, Pete enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps (3rd Marine Division) and served in Korea at the conclusion of the Korean conflict. He remained active in the reserve for many years and was a proud member of the Marine Corps League and the Korean War Veterans Association. Pete served in a variety of leadership roles including their scholarship committees where they awarded thousands of dollars to area high school students. He was proud of having his photography and chronicles exhibited in the national magazines of these two organizations.

Upon returning from his service with the USMC, Pete attended Laredo Community College (then Laredo Junior College) and eventually obtained his Bachelors and Masters of Arts in Education degrees from Texas State University (then Southwest Texas State University). Pete was a well-respected educator with the Laredo Independent School District. He was a teacher, assistant principal, and principal at Farias Elementary School. He was also a principal at J.C. Martin Elementary School and Heights Elementary School. In his 39 years in education, Pete demonstrated his life-long commitment to the betterment of his fellow man and his conviction that education was the means for people to improve their lives. This commitment was evident by his participation as a Scoutmaster for Troop 194, coaching in the American Little League, and as a member of the Blessed Sacrament Elementary Parents Association Board and the Laredo Federal Teachers Credit Union Board among other activities and associations.

In 1957, Pete met the love of his life, Ernestina (Tina) Treviño. He would gleefully tell the story of having spotted Tina through the storefront glass at the Kress Department Store downtown and deciding that she was the girl for him. For 55 years, Pete and Tina’s marriage bonded in mutual love, respect, friendship and devotion to one another and produced three sons, Oscar Gilberto (Sara Alicia), Pedro III (Irma Yvonne) and Gerardo Rene (deceased), six grandchildren, Jose Pedro, Arianna Natali, Gerardo Oscar, Alejandro Gilberto, Traci Yvonne (Mattheuw Rodriguez), Pedro Rene, and one great-grandchild, Mattheuw Ryan Rodriguez.

In retirement, Pete pursued his love for the outdoors and enjoyed spending time at his “3 Sons Ranch”. He also enjoyed traveling, was a voracious reader, and sometimes lost himself in pursuit of winnings at slot machines whenever he could play. Pete also continued with his community activities and did not wane in his support of these groups until his health no longer allowed him to participate.

His family and friends loved Pete. This was especially true during his last years when his health started to decline. Many people too numerous to mention gave of themselves to spend time with Pete until his last days, but special mention must be made of his three sisters-in-law, Elvira, Rosa Alicia and Diana Elizabeth Gonzalez who tenderly cared for him, prayed with him, sang for him, and loved him until the end.

We are all blessed to have had Pete in our lives for as long as we did and we pray for his eternal peace with the Lord our Father. Pete is survived by his wife, Ernestina, his sons Oscar (Sara Alicia) and Pedro III (Irma Yvonne), grandchildren Jose Pedro, Arianna Natali, Gerardo Oscar, Alejandro Gilberto, Traci Yvonne (Mattheuw) Rodriguez and Pedro Rene, great-grandchild, Mattheuw Ryan Rodriguez, sister Belia (Felix deceased) Villanueva, sister in law Carmen (Alberto deceased) Treviño, sisters in law, Maria Lydia (Emilio deceased) Garza, Janie (Ruben) Guajardo, Adela (Rogelio) Garay, Graciela (Oscar) Chavez, Elvira, Rosa Alicia and Diana Elizabeth Gonzalez, brothers-in-law Antonio (Graciela) Gonzalez, Gilberto (Maria deceased) and Jesus Candelario (Margarita), and numerous nieces and nephews.
