OSCAR J. PEÑA, SR.
December 9, 1932 – September 21, 2023
Oscar J. Peña, Sr., 90, of Laredo, Texas, passed away on September 21, 2023, peacefully in his home.
He was born on December 9, 1932 to Alfonso Peña and Margarita Kuehner in Laredo, Texas. He was a beloved spouse, parent, grandparent, sibling, uncle, and friend who touched the lives of many both personally and professionally.
He is survived by his daughter, Marta Montemayor (Jose) and his grandchildren, Oscar O. Peña (Doreen), Karl W. Peña, Jose Montemayor (Patricia), Oscar Montemayor, and David Peter Peña Gomez and several great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Marta C. Peña, and his beloved sons, Oscar J. Peña Jr., and David Peña.
Oscar J. Peña Sr., was known for his work in the legal community. He was a practicing attorney and member of the State Bar for more than 55 years. He enjoyed riding his bicycle, travelling, reading, gardening, and spending time with his family and closest friends. He was known as a fiery trial attorney who never backed down from a fight and he was sage legal mentor.
A born athlete, he graduated from Martin High School and then hitchhiked to Commerce, Texas and walked on to the football team at East Texas State University. Where his team went undefeated for two seasons. While on the team, he played in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida.
He then availed himself of the G.I. Bill, served in the Korean conflict, and taught English to the locals.
After serving his country, Peña pursed his career in law and married Marta C. Peña and raised a family. He established a private law practice in the historic St. Peter’s neighborhood that still serves the community after more than fifty years.
The family will be receiving condolences on Monday evening, September 25, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels & Cremation Services, 1410 Jacaman Rd.; where a Vigil for the Deceased and Chapel Service will commence at 7 p.m.
A private cremation will take place at a later date.
