MARIA LUCILA VELA SEPTEMBER 21, 1938 - JUNE 19, 2015 Maria Lucila Vela went to be with our Lord on Friday, June 19, 2015. She was born on September 21, 1938 in Laredo, Texas where she lived most of her life. She worked for Laredo Independent School District for more than 20 years; then moving to San Antonio, Texas in July of 1992. Lucy, as we all knew her, was a very caring and loving person. Every night before retiring to bed she would call her closest nieces to say good night and give us her blessing just like she did to many of us the day before she passed. She will always be in our hearts hoping that someday we will be united again in our Lord's home. My beloved aunt, sister, and friend; you will be missed forever and ever. Thank you so much for your love and blessings. I will treasure it forever. She is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Florencia Vela; her two sisters, Guadalupe Ruiz and Carolina Gonzalez. She is survived by her two sons, Jose Gerardo (Cindy Laguna) Gonzalez, and Rosendo (Teresa) Salazar, Jr.; three grandsons of whom she raised as her own, Jose Gerardo Gonzalez, Jr., Jose Manuel Gonzalez, and Jose Francisco Gonzalez of San Antonio. She had 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends from Laredo, San Antonio, Albuquerque, and Minnesota. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring at Cortez from 5 to 9 in the evening. A Rosary will be held at 7 in the evening. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 25, 2015 departing the funeral home at 8:00 a.m. to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 8:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to offset funeral expenses are requested to be made to the funeral home.
