Mrs. Maria Guadalupe B. Tamayo was called to her eternal rest on Friday, June 24, 2016 in Laredo, Texas. To all who knew her, Lupita was a loyal and trusted friend. She was born in Berclair, Texas to George and Mercedes Borrego on September 27, 1921. Being the eldest of the girls, Lupita helped her father raise her sisters and brothers after her mother's early passing.
Always one who enjoyed sports, she joined the all-female baseball league in South Texas akin to the story recounted in one of her favorite movies "A League of Their Own". During WWII, she worked for the U.S. Government in support of our military soldiers. In 1946 Lupita met and married the love of her life, Antonio P. Tamayo. In their 69 years of marriage, Lupita and Tony were rarely apart.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: The Most Reverend James A. Tamayo, Bishop of the Diocese of Laredo and Mrs. Mercy Barrera of Corpus Christi; grandchildren: Yvonne and Shawn Dick of Round Rock, Leslie Barrera of Houston, and Michael Barrera of Corpus Christi; as well as her two great-granddaughters: Katie and Calleigh Dick of Round Rock. Lupita is also lovingly remembered by her sisters: Amparo Torrez and Connie Maldonado; brother: George Borrego, Jr. (Connie) and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition, Lupita is survived by her two sisters-in-law: Marta Michel of Baytown and Lola Lodrique of Fort Worth.
A woman of great faith, she served as an officer of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas in support of religious vocations. Her laughter, her smile, and her loving ways will be greatly missed by many dear relatives and friends.
Our family is most grateful for all the prayers and support extended to our loved one and to our family.
