Mara Luisa Sandlin August 25, 1922 - June 27, 2014 Mara Luisa Sandlin, or "Mae" as her teammates called her, passed away in the early morning hours of June 27th. Mary was born on August 25, 1922 and lived a life full of passion and love. This was evident from an early age when she discovered baseball and took to the mound, only to become a local and regional celebrity for her pitching skills. Mary's hard work and dedication was apparent, when she worked at the Army Air Corp Base, followed by the Laredo Air Force Base where she worked in the Personnel Division. This totaled over 30 years of commitment to our government. Mary and Larry Sandlin wed in April of 1944. They were married for 69 years before Larry passed away in December, 2013. Mary was a founding Board Member of the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Foundation. She was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and involved in the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Isabella the Catholic #683 for 46 years. She was also active member of NARFE. She is survived by her daughter Shirley Sandlin Gonzalez, son in law Bob Gonzalez, three grandchildren, Rob, Marc and Ana Sabrina, 6 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Visitation will be held Monday, June 30, 2014 at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring @ Cortez from 5 to 9 in the evening. The Catholic Daughters will offer a Rosary at 5 p.m., with a Vigil for the Deceased offered by the Church at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2014 departing the funeral home at 8 a.m. to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 8:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Laredo Animal Protective Society. Play ball, Mae!
