Maria Teresa Garza

Maria Teresa Garza, 96, was called to her eternal home by Our Lord on Sunday, January 14, 2024.  She was born in Laredo to Edmundo and Olivia Cavazos on December 29, 1927.  She graduated from Ursuline Academy in Laredo, attended Our Lady of Victory in Fort Worth, and University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, graduating with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Education.  She returned to Laredo where she met and married her husband of 59 years, Carlos G. Garza, and began her 40-year career as an educator with LISD, teaching both in the classroom and home-bound students.   She was a devout Catholic, a life-long member of Blessed Sacrament Church and a member of the Alter Society.  Most significantly, she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, and undoubtedly her most valued role was matriarch of her family who will miss her dearly. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Edmundo and Olivia Cavazos; husband Carlos G. Garza; daughter Dr. Olivia Teresa Garza and son-in-law Peter Quinones.

Left to cherish her memory are children, Dr. Carlos (Eileen) Garza, Robert L. Garza, Guillermo Garza, and Patricia Quinones; granddaughter Sarah Garza; son-in-law Jesse Wood; two sisters, Maria de la Luz (Ricardo) Vela, and Esther C. Juarez; two brothers, Dr. Edmundo (Maria Guadalupe) Cavazos, and Dr. Jose (Irma) Cavazos as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many other beloved relatives and friends.

The family will be receiving condolences on Wednesday morning January 17, 2024 from 8am to 10:30am at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels & Cremation Services, 719 Loring at Cortez; where a Vigil for the Deceased and Rosary will commence at 9am.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday Morning January 17, 2024 departing at 10:30am from Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am.

Rite of Committal and interment will follow at the family plot in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Carlos Garza, Robert L. Garza, Jesse Wood and honorary pallbearer Guillermo Garza.
