Maria Del Refugio “Cuquita” Gonzalez, 93, our beloved mother joined our Lord in His heavenly kingdom on Sunday, September 20, 2020, she passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born June 15, 1927 in Laredo, Texas. And married her true love in December 1953, Jose “Pepe” Bartolo Gonzalez, Jr. in December of 1953, who preceded her in death 1991.
Cuquita loved spending time with her children and having weekly “merienda’ visits at her sister’s home. She retired in 1997 after 31 years as secretary to the counseling department from Martin High School. She enjoyed life to the fullest and caring for all four of her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; Jose Bartolo Gonzalez, Jr., parents; Pedro and Mercedes Cabrera and also by her siblings; Pedro (Bertha) Cabrera, Jr., Luis (Doris) Cabrera, Mercedes (Ignacio) Gonzalez and Isabel Cabrera.
Left to cherish her memory are her children; son Jose B. (Vivian) Gonzalez, III, daughter Leticia I. Garcia Gonzalez, sister: Clara Cabrera Carpenter, grandchildren; Nicolas (Vanessa), Zachary, Isabel, and Joaquin. Also cherishing her memory are her great grandchildren; Colton, Nathan and Matthew and for the last three years her wonderful caregiver: Leona Iris Gonzalez and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 16th at 12:00 noon at St. Patrick Church (555 E. Del Mar Blvd.). Interment will follow immediately with a private ceremony.
Due to COVID19 concerns, the family respectfully requests that those wishing to attend the funeral mass wear protective masks and maintain a safe personal distance from the family and those in attendance.
