Leo Dale Squint, 78, entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 01, 2016.
Leo was born on September 24, 1937 in Mishawaka, Indiana but was raised in South Bend, Indiana. He was the second child of Leo Walter Squint and Ruth E. Ellis Squint. Leo graduated from Washington-Clay High School in South Bend, IN in 1955. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Army on October 23, 1956. After completing basic training in Fort Carson, CO he was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX until July 1958, when he was sent overseas and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and Korea.
He received his honorable discharge at Fort Sheridan, IL and moved south to El Paso, Texas. Leo then started working with the El Paso Police Department in January 16, 1960, and as a uniformed officer until June 04, 1964 when he was promoted to Detective in the Burglary-Theft-Narcotics Division. He left the El Paso Police Department in August of 1967 to join the Texas Highway Patrol.
After completion of the Texas DPS Academy, he was stationed in Sierra Blanca until December 1968, when he was transferred to Fort Hancock to open up a "one-man station". Leo left the DPS in November 1970 for the United States Border Patrol in Laredo, TX. He spent nearly 24 years of his career at the Laredo and Laredo North Station and retired on September 27, 1994 as a Field Operations Supervisor. After challenging the test and getting his Texas "Peace Officer" Commission back in August 1995, Leo joined the Webb County Sheriff's Department briefly, until January 1997.
In November 1997, Leo joined the El Paso Independent School District Police Department and served there until June 2000, when he joint Clint Texas Police Department as a Sergeant. Leo finally called it quits effective July 31, 2003 and came back to Laredo to stay.
Among all his accomplishments, Leo has a "Master Peace Officer" certificate which he was very proud of as only 7% of all Peace Officers in the State of Texas are "Master Certified". He was very proud to serve with Clint Police Department and although they only had 6 officers, 5 of them were Master Certified Peace Officers. Leo was also a certified Instructor as a Peace Officer.
He dedicated himself to his career as a law enforcement officer in the state of Texas from 1960 through 2003. In a span of over 43 years, he worked with the El Paso Police Department, Texas Highway Patrol, United States Border Patrol, Webb County Sheriff's Department, El Paso Independent School District, and the Clint Police Department. He was a truly honorable man and will be dearly missed.
