LAZARO MEDINA CANTU
July 19, 1942 – March 04, 2018
Lazaro Medina Cantu, 75, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 04, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.
After a brief battle with cancer, dad passed away peacefully early in the morning. Words cannot express the grief and sorrow we’re feeling. He was a wonderful husband, father, friend, brother, and mason.
He was the oldest of 8 children and was very close to his brothers and sisters. We have many great memories of him and our aunts, uncles, cousins, and second cousins. Family was so important to him and he always watched out for them.
Aside from being a dedicated family man, he was also a hard worker and provider. He was an entrepreneur and had established a successful business in international trade. We learned our first lessons in supply chain and compliance from him, when he taught us how to properly answer the phone, send a telex (back in the day), and do a bill of lading when we were young. He pushed us to follow our dreams and work hard to accomplish them but the biggest lesson was reminding us that in business and in life “always do what is just and right”. This has always been part of our work ethic.
Our dad was also a poet and writer. He actually wrote a book, a collection of short stories from life, growing up in Mexico and Masonic teachings. He was editor and publisher of his Masonic Newsletter. Being the hopeless romantic that he was, he wrote a love song to our mother for their 50th wedding anniversary.
Dad was not very religious but was one of the most spiritual people we’ve ever known and truly believed in the great architect of the universe, God. He was a philosopher and Master Mason reaching the highest level, the 33rd degree. He loved debating about philosophy and even established a discussion group called “El Club Toby”. We have so many memories of visiting with our dad and our Mason uncles from both sides of the border.
For the past 35 years he dedicated his free time to his beloved Shriners, working arduously to coordinate with the Shriners Hospital doctors and the Laredo Shrine Club to take applications, obtain humanitarian visas for patients, and raise funds for transportation of kids to Shriner hospital in Galveston and Houston. He helped over 1,500 kids in his lifetime.
Dad was proud of his work as a business and mason. He touched many lives, but out of all his accomplishments in life, he always reminded us that raising us was his greatest accomplishment and honor. He was a wonderful father, teacher, and mentor to us all. A loving husband to our mom, a great father in law to our husbands and an amazing grandfather to our children. Everything we are is because of him and he will always be in our hearts and guide us.
We love you so much dad!
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lazaro and Idalia Medina, and brother Jose Medina.
Lazaro is survived by his spouse of close to 55 years of marriage: Mrs. Maria Antonia Medina; daughters: Rosa (Francisco) Acosta and Sandra M. (Peter) Fallgatter; grandchildren: Azael Acosta, Osmar Acosta, David Fallgatter, Daniel Fallgatter, Juan Medina and children; siblings: Luis (Susie) Medina, Rosa Maria (Oscar) Rivera-Medina, Lucy (Francsico) Contreras-Medina, Maria del Refugio Guerrero-Medina, Maria Elena (Sergio) Medina-Garza, Idalia (Ricardo) Medina-Zepeda, sister in law: Rosario (Manuel Rodriguez) Trejo; brother in law, Francisco (Maria de la Luz) Trejo , as well as by many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, many friends, and colleagues.
We would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to his brother Mason’s both in Laredo and Nuevo Laredo for their compassion, care and friendship. As well as to the Laredo Shrine Club for their support and friendship to our dad, especially to Jose Ayala, who traveled with him to Houston and Galveston, no matter the day or time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be greatly appreciated and made out to: Laredo Shrine Club, c/o Memo Lazaro-Transportation Fund, PO BOX 451443, Laredo, TX 78045-1443
