"Come to me all you who are weary and heavy burdened and I will give you rest.-I am gentle and humble of heart."-Matthew 11
"Remember, I am with you always, until the end of time." Matthew 28:20
Laura Leticia Garcia Magnon did just that on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, when she went to be with the Lord, peacefully surrounded by her immediate family and rejoicing in the true meaning of that day.-She knew fully well that although she reluctantly and sadly was leaving many loved ones behind, she was joyfully reuniting with her very dearest family members who had preceded her in death"?her wonderful and loving parents:-Mr. Julio Garcia and Mrs. Antonia Rubio Garcia; her only brother, Julio Arnoldo Garcia, whom she adored and to whom she openly professed her devotion; and her beloved sons, George C. Jr. and Alfonso Gerardo Magnon, who stole her heart when they were born and owned it until the day she died.-They were truly the "loves of her life."-So therein lies the joy in the sadness that her family feels today; for she is truly in a happy place.
Laura was a good daughter, a wonderful mother, a devoted sister, and a good friend to so many.-She graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1957 and to this day remained an active and faithful member of the Class of '56, never missing a reunion or any of their special events.-It was Ursuline Academy that instilled in her an unflinching trust in the Lord and an unparalled devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.-She went on to graduate from Incarnate Word College and upon attaining her B.S. Degree in Education, she embarked on a seemingly endless career working with middle and high school students in the area of science.-Little did she know that this deep love she had for young people would consume her life for forty-five years.-She ruled in her classroom always with a firm hand and with the guiles of a stern disciplinarian, yet she taught them and embraced them with a tender heart.-They were all hers.-She was a member of the first teaching staff of Nixon High School when it first opened its Portals of Learning n 1964 and remained as the "Reigning Queen"" of the NHS Science Department until her retirement in 2004.-Prior to her historic career there, she taught Biology at Christen Jr. High School from 1959-1964.-Forty five years of her life were dedicated to forming the minds, shaping the characters, and inspiring the lives of hundreds upon hundreds of young people in this community.-Therefore, after the new Nixon High School Science Building is named the Laura Garcia Magnon Science Building on November 28, 2012, her legacy will live on forever.
She was a member of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, Princess Pocahontas Council where she had served as president and chairperson of major events; her favorite past-time was attending her birthday club luncheons and was a member of the Golden Girls and the Cheers Birthday Club where she was much loved and will be greatly missed.
Laura was also preceded in death by her loving and beautiful niece, Cristina Cecilia Garcia.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Rosario Flores Garcia; her nephew Julio (Sonya) Garcia, Jr; her niece, Leticia Lourdes Garcia; another niece, Mrs. Leticia (Adolfo) Vela and Family from McAllen, TX; Armando and Sandra Hinojosa and Family.-She is further survived by her adored grand-nieces and nephews:-Zoe, Julito and Ben as well as her very special friend and companion, Mrs. Cecilia V. Garcia and many cherished friends.
