Justino Bernal Sr.

April 14, 1936 — January 17, 2019

Justino Bernal, Sr., peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 17, 2019. Justino was a lifelong resident of Laredo and worked with the Coca Cola Company and Tex-Mex Railways for many years. He was a musician at heart who taught himself to play the accordion which lead him to form “Justino Bernal y Su Conjunto” and headed the group as lead singer. He would often serenade his loving wife Esther with their song “Mi Tesoro”. In addition to his band, he also created “The Laredo Sound System” and was recognized by former Mayor Aldo Tatangelo. Dr. Ike’s hired him to DJ for them every weekend for many years. After his father’s passing, he took over the family neighborhood bar “Bernal’s Place” which was previously located on the corner of Price and Tilden.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fortunato and Felicitas Bernal; and his daughter Rosa Maria Bernal.

Left to cherish his memory are: his loving wife of 63 years of marriage, Esther H. Bernal; his children, Justino (Mari) Bernal, Jr., Maria Esther Bernal, Alicia (Robert) Swathwood, Rebecca (Hector) Bernal, Ricardo (Christy) Bernal, Margie (Victor) Bernal de Paz, Ramiro (Juanita) Bernal, and Ruben (Cora) Bernal; 24 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, numerous nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

The family will be receiving condolences on Wednesday evening, January 23, 2019 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels & Cremation Services, 719 Loring at Cortez; where a Vigil for the Deceased and Rosary will commence at 7 p.m. by Deacon Hector Hernandez.
