Josephine Lafon, age 91 passed away peacefully on the 9th of June 2014. Josephine was born in Laredo on the 20th of April 1923. She was the fourth born child of parents, Maria Merriweather Lafon and Louis A. Lafon. Josie and her sister Diana were well known for their cooking and baking skills and worked as caters for Braniff Airlines. She was a devoted breeder of cocker spaniels and ultimately showed her trained pooches at competitions. She was a long time teacher in California. Josephine had a flare for adventure, so much so that she even tried her hand at race car driving. While in California, in addition to race car driving, she also practiced quick draw pistol shooting. Josie and her family cherished the Lafon Farm, where she played as a child and had memorable family outings. The farm was sold in 2006, Josie however reserved an area of that farm to be donated to the City by the Developer, for a City Park in the desire that it be named in memory of her mother, Maria M. Lafon. Her worldly charm and warm spirit will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Diana and Thelma; and by her brother, Louis, Jr. Josephine is survived by her cousins, Gustavo Pea of Brownsville, TX, William Pea of Houston, TX, and Marion Marmon of San Antonio, TX. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, a Rosary will commence at 8:45 a.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial will immediate follow at 9 a.m. Interment will be held at the family plot in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
