JOSEFINA CONSUELO GARZA LOREDO

October 06, 1937 - March 07, 2016

Josefina Consuelo passed away peacefully on Monday, March 07, 2016 in a San Antonio hospital after a long illness. Born on October 06, 1937, Jozy, also known as Chelo, was a lifelong resident of Laredo, Texas. She attended LISD public schools and graduated from Martin High School in 1954. She enrolled at Laredo Junior College and graduated from Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas with a degree in Elementary Education. She began her work at the old Central School "La Escuela Amarilla" under the principalship of Mr. Luis Novoa.

In the mid 70s she returned to TWU and obtained her Master's Degree in Education with a Certificate in Counseling. In addition, she earned her License in Professional Counseling. Upon returning to Laredo, she was assigned as a school counselor at Martin High School where she worked with Special Education students. She retired after 39 years of service to the Laredo Independent School District. A highly intelligent woman, and a great conversationalist, she was kind, loving, compassionate, and respectful toward others. A professional and noble educator to the end, she carried her vocation well in her demeanor. She rejoiced when former students approached her and identified themselves and recalled the time spent with her at school.

Jozy served her community as a member of the Border Counseling Association and the Texas Counseling Association. She was an active member of The Alethea Society since 1960 and served as an officer and in numerous board level positions. This fine professional organization raises funds for scholarships by hosting talent shows from local public and private schools. She looked forward to the monthly meetings and yearly events. She also delighted in joining with local TWU alumni at their monthly luncheons.

A devout Catholic, she taught CCD classes at San Agustin Church as a young woman, and later participated in numerous Bible study groups. She was a friend of The Terciary Franciscan Order.

In her youth she enjoyed traveling with friends and colleagues to Monterrey, Mexico City, and Acapulco. With her family, she enjoyed long road trips that took them sightseeing to California, Washington DC, and beautiful places in Mexico.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose Natividad Garza and Josefina Arispe de Garza, who together owned Botica Garza on Iturbide St. from 1930 to 1969, where Jozy worked as a youngster and later during her school breaks. She was also preceded by her brother, Juan Jose Garza; her sister, Graciela (Rodolfo ) Hernandez; her husband, Armando Loredo; and her grandniece, Gracie Marie Hernandez.

She is survived by her beloved nephews, who loved her as a mother, Jose Gabriel Hernandez, Dr. Juan Jose Garza, Jr., of Los Angeles, California, Rodolfo Hernandez, Jr., Juan Alberto Hernandez, Fernando Javier Hernandez, and Gerardo R. (Bertha) Hernandez, and numerous other relatives.

She will be greatly missed by her many friends and colleagues who loved her very much, and who she loved in return.
