Jose Rubio

Jose Marcelino "Pichino" Rubio, 86, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Pichino was a proud graduate of Holding Institute of Laredo. He maintained friendships dating back to his days at Holding for the rest of his life. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II as a member of the Army of Occupation in Japan. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was the director of the Webb County Detention Center for several years. A lifelong Democrat, Pichino was passionate about politics. He enjoyed nothing more than a hard fought campaign. In political circles, he was known for his ability to energize crowds and inspire action. Pichino was known for his love of horses. He was a race horse owner for many years. He was also a terrific baseball player. He served as a volunteer Little League coach for many years, sharing his love of the game with countless young players. Later in life, he took great pleasure in attending games and cheering for his grandchildren. He was a loving father and great friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Guadalupe Rubio; sister, Lupita Rubio; and sister in law, Concepcion M. Rubio.

He is survived by his wife, Josephina Rubio; sons, Jose M. (Elizabeth) Rubio Jr., Carlos M. (San Juana) Rubio; grandchildren, Joe III, Margaret, Julia, Roberto, Diego; brother, Alberto Rubio; as well as numerous other loved relatives and friends.

The Rubio family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Arturo Garza-Gongora, Dr. Benson Huang, Dr. Jorge Vela, and the staffs of Laredo Medical Center and Regent Care Center, Victor Hugo Pena, and Maria De Jesus Morales for their kindness and dedication to Mr. Rubio.

Pallbearers will be: Joe Rubio III, Roberto R. Rubio, Pete Sanchez, Homero Martinez, Alberto Garcia, Alfredo Garcia, Victor Pena, and Manuel "Meme" Rubio.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: Mario Santos Jr., Alberto Rubio G., and Sebastian Hernandez.
