Jorge Garza

August 20, 1930 — November 16, 2012

Mr. Jorge O. de la Garza, Sr., 82, entered into the gates of heaven suddenly and unexpectedly in San Antonio, TX.-Jorge was a devout and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend to many.

He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, where he served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister.

He served his country proudly in the US ARMY in active duty in the Korean Conflict.-Most recently, he was elected president of the local chapter of the American Legion Post 59, a post which he was delighted and honored to have received.

During his lifetime, Jorge gave back to his beloved community which he loved so dearly in many levels of service such as being elected for two terms as a Webb County Commissioner for Precinct 1 in the 1990's.-He was honored with the dedication of the Head Start Center located at 2404 Galveston St. to be named the Jorge O. de la Garza Head Start Center.-This center provides care and education preparation to local families and their children.-Many families benefit from this program.-Jorge was ever so proud of the many good works this county does for its community.-Jorge was also a Board Member of the Webb County Appraisal District for the last three years.

Jorge was an entrepreneur who began his working career under the George Link appliance store, which he acquired in 1957.-The store was located at Loring Street.-He opened the De La Garza Service Center on 801 Farragut St and maintained it for many years before moving to 2610 Guadalupe St in later years.-For 50 years he was an Air Conditioning Contractor mainly for York.-He was a founding member of the Laredo Manufacturing Association that still remains active to this day.-As part of his love for this community, he was also one of the developers of Hillside subdivision alongside Clinton Smith and Oscar Zuniga.

Every Sunday Jorge and Mela would hold open house for their family and friends and would cook for all to enjoy his famous carne asada.-The couple always had a full house and the more people he had over, the happier he was.-This is one of the many cherished and fond memories which will undoubtedly be held for many years in the hearts and minds of his spouse, children, grandchildren, great grand children, many other relatives and friends.

Jorge now joins his beloved parents:-Juan Manuel and Josefina C. de la Garza; brothers and sisters:-Carlos de la Garza, Manuel de la Garza, Alfonso de la Garza, Luis de la Garza, Mario de la Garza, Juan de la Garza, Berta Garcia and Sara Brunner who preceded him in death.

He leaves behind his wife of 61 years of loving marriage:-Mrs. Rosa Imelda Ramirez de la Garza; children:-Diana E. Gutierrez (Victor San Miguel, Jr.), Rosa J. Gutierrez, Laura E. Alejo (Dr. Esteban Alejo), Jorge O. de la Garza, Jr, Marta Campos (Adan Campos), Blanca McDonald; grandchildren:-Alberto J. Gutierrez, Diana I. Palacios, Cecilia E. Gutierrez, Ruben Gutierrez, Jr., Alejandro Gutierrez, Gabriel Alejo, Juan Carlos Alejo, Jorge Arturo Alejo, Francisco Alejo, Magaly Castaneda, Jorge O. de la Garza, III, Cristina Ballesteros, Monica Perales, Michelle McDonald-Stillings and Amos McDonald as well as 19 great grandchildren, many other loved relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be:-Alberto J. Gutierrez, Ruben Gutierrez, Jr., Alejandro Gutierrez, Gabriel Alejo, Juan Carlos Alejo, Jorge Arturo Alejo, Francisco Alejo, Jorge de la Garza, III and Amos McDonald.
