John Mayo McKeown, 87, entered into eternal rest on November 30, 2016. He was born on February 04, 1929 in Tulsa, Oklahoma but was a long time resident of Laredo, Texas. Son of Mayo Elder and Mary Grace McVey McKeown.

John graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was a veteran of the Korean War. One of his many passions was soccer and during his time at the academy he was a member of the soccer team. Upon his return, he received his U.S. Customs Broker license in 1974. Mr. McKeown had a successful business, McKeown Customs Broker Inc., for over 40 years. John was very involved with the community. He was a Knight Grand Cross Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, an active member of the Laredo Licensed Customs Broker Association, the St. Patrick Men's Club, the Laredo Noon Rotary Club, as well as past president and chaplain of the Laredo 1959 Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association. He was also past president of the Laredo Animal Protective Society. John and Father Tom McGettrick created the youth soccer program at St. Patrick Catholic Church. He also portrayed George Washington in 2001.

He was preceded in death by his son, William Moser McKeown.

John is survived by his wife, Jeanette Moser McKeown; daughter, Carolyn J. McKeown; grandchildren, Carolyn Lauren Hinojosa Walker, Ann Michelle Hinojosa (Ari) Hofman, and Eduardo Javier Hinojosa Jr.; great grandchildren, William Christopher Walker, Rheya Ashley Walker; siblings, Patricia (Herbert) Stanley, and Thomas († Ruth) McKeown. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, December 04, 2016 at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels, 1410 Jacaman Rd. where a Rosary will commence at 7 p.m.

Funeral procession will depart on Monday, December 05, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home to St. Patrick Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.

Interment will then follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Eduardo Javier Hinojosa Jr., Ari Hofman, Jeffory Walker, William Walker, Marcel Notzon III, James A. Notzon, Christopher Notzon, David Slaughter Jr., and Edward Glassford.

Honorary Pallbearers will be: A.R. Sanchez Jr., Javier Guajardo Jr., Buddy Gardner, Jim Steidel, Ernesto Sanchez, Thomas Rodriguez, Thomas McKeown, Herbert Stanley, and Mary Freeman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Catholic Social Services or to a charity of your choice.
