Hughenna Gauntlett

Hughenna Louise Gauntlett, MD, FACS, a retired surgeon from Los Angeles, passed
away on July 25, 2010 after 94 wonderful years of serving others. While a devoted mother and wife, she was chief of the department of surgery of California Hospital Medical Center and also served as a physician and surgeon of that and other Los Angeles hospitals for over 25 years.

Dr. Gauntlett was distinguished as the first African-American female certified by the American Board of Surgeons in 1968.

She is survived by her twin sons, surgeon Arthur D. Santos, MD, FACS (Olivia), whom is currently on the medical staff of Laredo Medical Center and surgeon Alfred A. Santos, MD, FACS (Jean) practicing in North Carolina. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Emily Jean Santos and Joshua Aaron Santos.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels, 1410 Jacaman Road; as well as in Los Angeles, CA (Inglewood Park Cemetery on Prairie Avenue) on Friday where she will be interred next to her mother.
