December 10, 2023 — May 22, 2015

HILDA VASQUEZ PORTSCHELLER SCHUNIOR Our beloved aunt and mentor slipped peacefully away from us on Friday, May 22, 2015, to join her pre-deceased loved ones in a heavenly celebration. She was ninety-one years old and still an influential guide to her nieces and nephews. Hilda was predeceased by her husband: Rene J. Schunior, her parents Juanita Vazquez Portscheller and Eduardo Vazquez. Also gone before her were all her siblings: Eduardo, Lydia, Carlota, Prudenciano, Dora, Aurora and Beatrice Vazquez Portscheller. She is survived by her numerous nieces and nephews who were her "children". Hilda was a positive happy person always happiest when her nieces and nephews were together sharing time with each other and with her. She was a humble person but very proud of her heritage. Her grandfather was an immigrant who came from Germany in the 1800's. Heinrich Portscheller was a designer and master builder in the Northern Mexico and South Texas Area. Among other buildings he designed and built and still in active use is St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Laredo, where a plaque in his honor is placed. His architectural style and brick making techniques have been the subject of study by experts in architecture and construction. For her part, Mrs. Schunior devoted her professional life to the then Laredo Junior College, now Laredo Community College. She joined the college in 1948, two years after it opened. She was a library clerk and typist. She moved on to serve as secretary to the then Dean Neal Nelson and then to Dean Ray Laird. In 1953, she became a bookkeeper in the Business Office. By 1973, she was serving the College as Business Office Manager. In 1978, she was honored for being the first college employee to have completed thirty years of service. She was promoted to Accounts Receivable Manager where she remained until her retirement in September of 1984. Visitation to bid farewell to Hilda will be on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring at Cortez, beginning at 9 a.m and departing the chapel at 10:30 a.m. for the funeral mass. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in downtown Laredo with Rev. Dennis Arrechiga, close family friend and Pastor of St. Matthew Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas as the main celebrant. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandnephews: Alfredo Siller, Jr., Rolando Heigne Jr., Juan Jose Alvarez, Manuel Ruiz, Gabriel Rubio, John Virgil Mendez and Martin Rene Acevedo. Our aunt specifically requested that in Lieu of Flowers, donations be made to the Sacred Heart Children's Home in Laredo, Texas.
