Herlinda V. Gutierrez, a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend to many, was called by the Lord on Thursday, February 24, 2011 after a short illness, and was welcomed in heaven by her beloved husband Jose A. Gutierrez.-She was 103.-She passed away at her residence in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by her loving family.-
Mrs. Gutierrez was born on February 21, 1908 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and came to Laredo, TX at the age of 7 years old with her family during the Mexican Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eulogio and Delfina Villarreal; husband, Jose A. Gutierrez; siblings, Maria de Jesus V. Guerra, Emma V. Rodriguez, Dora V. Delgado, and Juan E. Villarreal; sons-in-law Raymond S. York and Alejandro Cavazos.
She is survived by her children Graciela G. Gunnoe, Nora G. York, Jose A. (Lucy) Gutierrez, Jr., and Olivia G. Cavazos; grandchildren, Gracie (Charles) Phillips, Nora (Robert) McCain, Mary Alice (Adolfo) Gutierrez, Patricia (David) Raymond, Raymond. S. York, Jr., Zulema (Jaime) Hinojosa, Michael (Elia) York, David (Becky) Gutierrez, Richard (Tara) Gutierrez, Joanne (James) Oliver, Eddie (Laura) Cavazos, Alex (Arta) Cavazos, Maria (David) Russell and Patti (Danny) Kratz, as well as 26 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren and an extended family of nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. Gutierrez will be remembered for her positive attitude, cheerfulness, and smile.-She was an accomplished pianist, playing both classical and popular music.-At one time, she played the piano and entertained senior citizens at several area nursing homes.-Beautiful and poised, she once modeled for a Laredo Department Store.
Once asked what her secret to living a long life was, she responded, "be happy." and that she was.
She was always the life of the party, loved music and dancing.-She enjoyed playing pokeno and bingo with her dear friends in Laredo, but the most important thing she cherished in her life was her husband and children whom she adored.
The family extends their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Mann and the Nurses from Southern Care Hospice, as well as her caregivers, for their loyalty and dedication, Patsy Salas and Raquel Rios.
