Guadalupe Magdalena Guerra (Maya) died peacefully October 14, 2012.-Maya lived a wonderful and blessed life.-She graduated from Martin High School in 1957 where she was president of the Student Council and voted Most Likely to Succeed.-As a senior she was chosen from Texas to represent her state as a student ambassador to Europe.-She attended Laredo Junior College and received her degree in Business Education and later her Masters degree in guidance and counseling from Texas Women's University.-Maya also tool course work at Hunter College in New York City.
She began her teaching career at Martin High School, and later went to teach at Nixon high School when it first opened.-After obtaining her Masters degree she became a vocational counselor at Nixon High School where she stayed until her retirement.-She was a brilliant and caring woman who unselfishly gave of her time and effort to educate, help, counsel and guide thousands of students.-If there was one word to describe Maya it would be "GENEROUS" for she was always offering to help others in any way possible.-Although she never got married, she was like a second mother to her many nieces and nephews, and loved to brag about their accomplishments.-Maya was a great cook and was often asked to bake cakes for all kinds of occasions.
Throughout her teaching and counseling years, Maya received numerous awards and recognitions.-The 1995 W-Bar (Nixon High School Annual) was dedicated to her.-She was also named a TIGER LEGEND in 2010.-She was a devout Catholic who attended SAN JOSE CATHOLIC CHURCH regularly.
Maya was preceded in death by her parents: Alberto and Herminia Guerra; her brother: Guillermo (Willie) and by her brother in law, Guillermo Alarcon.-
She is survived by her brothers: Alberto (Beatriz), Margarito (Rosalinda); her sisters: Graciela (Guillermo"") Alarcon, Sylvia Rodriguez, and Adriana (David) Duncan, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family would like to especially to thank Dr. Joaquin Cigarroa, Dr. Francisco-Cigarroa, and Dr. Eduardo Miranda, as well as her friends for all their prayers and support during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, family requests contributions be made to San Jose Catholic Church, 109 N. Meadow Ave., Laredo, Texas 78041.
