EVANGELINA "VANGIE" ORNES July 10, 1926 - October 11, 2015 Evangelina Ornes, "Vangie" joined our Lord and Savior on October 11, 2015. She was born on July 10, 1926 in Aasco, Puerto Rico to Gabriel and Mariana Ornes. She moved with her family to New York City, and eventually they moved to Laredo. In 1944, Vangie graduated from San Augustine Catholic School. She earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master's degree from Columbia University in New York. An educator for over thirty years, she worked in Panama City with the Department of Defense and at several schools in Laredo. Her four brothers, Jorge Diaz, Rene Ornes, Edgar Ornes and Gabriel Ornes, Jr., preceded her in death. She will be missed by her sister-in-law, Yolanda Ornes, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Vangie dedicated her life to the Catholic Church and helping others. In the late 60s, Vangie welcomed Belinda and Pearl Montes into her home and helped raise them as if they were her own. She had a special bond with Pearl's daughter, Kendra, her husband Jesus Juan "J.J." and their children Jenna and Jaiden. The family would like to thank the staff and residents of The Village at Incarnate Word and the nurses and staff from Regent Care Center-Oakwell Farms for the loving care afforded to Vangie. Ms. Ornes will lie in state at St. John Neumann Catholic Church on Friday, October 23, 2015 beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a Rosary to follow at 9 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Msgr. James Harris immediately following the Rosary. Rite of Committal and Interment will then follow to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Remembrances in lieu of flowers may be made to the St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 102 Hillside Rd., Laredo, TX 78041, the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, 1100 Parthenon Place, New Caney, TX 77357 or the Congregation of Divine Providence, 5 S.W. 24th Street, San Antonio, TX 78207.
