EVA DOVALINA ZAPATA
DECEMBER 25, 1925 – FEBRUARY 27, 2018

Upon Tuesday evening, February 27, 2018, within the San Antonio suburb of Shavano Park, Mrs. Eva Dovalina-Zapata passed into the awaiting arms of our savior Lord Jesus Christ.

Mom was born upon Christ’s birthday in 1922 to Mr. Jose E. Dovalina and Adelaida M. Dovalina in Laredo, Texas. As members of our republic’s “Greatest Generation”, mom married George Zapata (a San Antonio Native) in 1943, in Laredo, prior to them moving to California where Dad underwent basic training in the U.S. Army in Santa Maria.

Upon Dad’s return from the Pacific Theatre of Operations in 1945, this matrimonial union, which would last 57 years, produced four other children. Each off-spring grew up to become successful individuals in their chosen fields of endeavor, which include education, finance and law enforcement, respectively. Mom was a classic “stay-at-home” housewife, caring for “hearth and home” while dad “brought home the bacon.” Along with Dad, Mom was always there for her kids and they often helped the PTA’s of the schools that their kids attended.

Once all the kids “flew the coop”, Mom redirected her unselfishness and selflessness to being a tireless volunteer as a member of the “Women’s Auxiliary” at Mercy Hospital during that institution’s years “on the hill” in east central Laredo. Simultaneously, she was equally dedicated to serving the Lord as an Officer of “Las Guadalupanas” and as an active member of “La Sociedad de Cristo Rey”, each organization pertinent to Christ the King Catholic Church. She additionally served her parish as a Lector and as a Eucharistic Minister, respectively.

Mom has been joined, in heaven, by her parents, Jose and Adelaida Dovalina. Also receiving mother are dad and little sister Lucille Elaine. Also greeting her were grandson Sergio Roel Garcia, Jr. and her siblings Lydia Dovalina-Hallmark, Jose, Diego, Roberto, Benjamin and Ismael Dovalina, respectively.

Mom’s survived by daughter Sylvia (Sergio) Garcia, Sr. of San Antonio; sons George Jr. of Washington, D.C., Luis (Alma) Zapata of Laredo, and Dan Zapata of San Antonio. Also surviving mom are grandchildren Selina (Chris) Garcia-Black, Sessie (Daniel) Zapata-Villarreal, Louie Zapata Jr., and step-grandson Sergio (Claudia) Saenz; great-grandchildren Weston Sergio Alba, Dylan Patrick Alba, Alina Kristelle Villarreal, Kinslee Greysen Black and Brayden Black, plus numerous nieces and nephews, respectively, survive Mom as well. Family friend Gary Young also survives Mom.

The viewing, featuring a DVD of Mom’s wonderful, loving life, shall be held on Friday, March 2nd, 2018 at Joe Jackson North Funeral and Cremation Services, 1410 Jacaman Rd., Laredo, TX 78041 from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Procession will form and immediately depart at 10:30 a.m. to Christ the King Catholic Church, 1105 Tilden Ave (Corner of Guadalupe St. and Tilden Ave) for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m.

Rite of Committal and Entombment will proceed to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery-Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will be: Dan Zapata, Louie Zapata, Sergio R. Garcia Sr., Dan Villarreal, Chris Black, Charles Hallmark, Weston S. Alba and Dylan P. Alba.
