Elsa Ofelia Lugo Cruz, 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at a local hospital with loved ones by her side. Mrs. Cruz was born in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico and became a lifelong resident of Laredo, Texas as a young child.
Ofelia was a housewife and raised all of her children. While raising her children she went back to finish high school and later proceeded on to continue her college education. She was highly active in her children’s extracurricular activities and would support them at all of their school events. Later on in life she was known for her famous tostadas at San Jose Church and spent her time volunteering at church functions as well as cleaning the parish. She was a member of the Guadalupana Association and was a devout Catholic. Because of her devotion to her parish and religion she was a friend to many and could always be counted on by friends and neighbors.
Her husband, Miguel Cruz Sr., and her sons, Jesus, Victor Manuel and Guillermo Cruz preceded Elsa Ofelia in death.
Mrs. Cruz is survived by her children: Consuelo “Chelo” Castillo, Miguel Cruz Jr., Ricardo Cruz, Jose Ramon (Elvira) Cruz, Amelia Burson, Rosa (Isidoro) Gallegos, Lydia Martinez, and Norma Alicia (Alberto) Ruiz; 26 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren.
The family is eternally grateful for Ana Laura Sanchez, who was Ofelia’s caregiver and best friend for the last two years of her life, as well as Jackie Macdonald, who cared for her as well.
The family will be receiving condolences on Friday evening, the 28th of April 2017 from 5 to 8 in the evening at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 Loring at Cortez, with a Vigil and Rosary being recited at 7.
Funeral procession will depart at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, the 29th of April 2017 to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 N. Meadow, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 8:30 in the morning.
Rite of Committal and Interment will follow to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Ricardo Cruz, Ramon Cruz, Michael Cruz, Jerry Cruz, Isabel Gallegos and Julio Esquivel.
