EDUARDO “WAYO” SALIDO
October 05, 1935 – April 11, 2017
Eduardo Salido Longoria passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 11, 2017. “Wayo,” as he was known to his friends and family, was born in Nuevo Laredo on October 5, 1935.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon J. Salido and Laura Longoria Salido.
Wayo, an avid golfer, aviator, and rancher is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Rebeca Garcia Salido, and their children Rebeca Salido (Miguel), Cristina Brittingham (Tommy), Susana Salido, Eduardo Salido (Vanessa), and Fernando Salido (Laura). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Miguel Alamilla, Tommy (Cristel), Andrew (Kimberly) and David Brittingham; Memo, Alfonso and Ricardo Benavides; Mariana, Sara and Ana Salido; Laura, Andrea and Rebeca Salido and his great grandchildren Miguel and Fernando Alamilla and Olivia Kate Brittingham. Surviving him are also his brothers Francisco (Diana) and Ramon (Maria Eugenia) Salido and his sister Laura Diez-Barroso (+Alejandro) of Mexico City. He is also survived by his extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Wayo's life was full of accomplishments. He was very proud that he was able to obtain his pilot’s license at the tender age of 15. He followed that accomplishment by establishing a crop dusting business while still a teenager, and followed his love of aviation by being a corporate pilot for the family business, flying the venerable Beech 18. His love of aviation persisted throughout his life never missing an opportunity to fly, see an air show, and always looking up when he heard a plane overhead.
In 1960, together with his father and his brothers, they established the well known Motel El Rio in Nuevo Laredo as a first class hotel with a renowned restaurant. During the 80’s he and his family opened the Victoria 3020 Restaurant in Nuevo Laredo. Later, together with his sons and other partners he established the Laredo Bar & Grill and later acquired the Pelicans Wharf. Wayo proudly served as a member of the Board of Directors at Laredo National Bank for nearly 30 years. Wayo was a lifelong golfer who shot four hole-in-ones and nearly accomplished the elusive golfer’s goal of shooting his own age. Wayo was a founding member of the Laredo Country Club where he served as president, member of the board, and house committee.
Wayo was a lifelong rancher, hunter, and avid outdoorsman. He was very proud of his ranch, “El Chupadero” where he started and ran a wildlife management program.
He loved to travel and especially enjoyed visiting Las Vegas where his favorite pastime was playing craps and video poker. He loved to drive and in doing so, took many memorable road trips with his family to California, Colorado, and Florida. During his many trips to Colorado with his family and friends, Wayo became an accomplished snow skier.
Above all, Wayo was a family man who always enjoyed having his children and grandchildren at his home. Wayo was a perfectionist, methodical and a stickler for organization. Honesty, integrity, and respect are words that define who he was.
