Dr. Virgilio H. Mata, 83, loving father of three sons, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2012. Dr. Mata, more familiarly known as "V.H." was lifelong resident of Laredo. Born on May 17, 1929 to Antonio and Sofia Mata. Dr. Mata attended school at Martin High School from where he graduated. He studied at Texas A&M University and the transferred to Universidad Atonoma de Mexico D.F. where he received his doctorate degree in 1956. It was there that he met and married his former wife Dolores Fernandez Somellera. He then joined the Baylor program in Houston, Texas where he was certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Later on he became a Diplomat of Fellow Surgeons. He returned to Laredo in 1963 where he joined his brothers Dr. J.J. Mata and Dr. Carlos Mata in establishing the Mata Clinic. He was extremely dedicated to his profession and for years earned the respect of his peers and patients. He loved to travel and did so worldwide. He was an avid collector of historical memorabilia, specializing in World War II artifacts. He spent his years after retirement relaxing and enjoying the company of friends and family.-

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Mr. and Mrs. Antonio and Sofia G. Mata; as well as his brothers, Antonio Mata, J.J. Mata, Homero Mata; and sisters, Sofia (Bob) Fisher, and Gloria Reyna.

Dr. Mata is survived by his beloved sons, Jorge Humberto Mata, Carlos Antonio Mata, Robert Mata; grandchildren, Alessandra Mata, Daniella Mata, and Eric Mata. He is also survived by his brother, Carlos H. (Joann) Mata; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, loved relatives and friends.
