Born in Mexico City, Ricardo grew up in Nicaragua. Following the devastating earthquake of 1972, he moved to Belgium. While his early education focused on architectural engineering and volunteering medical care in the mountain communities of Nicaragua, in Europe he began his medical studies. Moving back to the United States, he graduated from Michigan State University School of Osteopathic Medicine. In 1996, after completing residencies at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Hofstra University, he moved to Laredo to begin his neurosurgical practice.
In Laredo, he devoted his life to his patients’ care by continually improving his professional development and surgical skills, starting with a fellowship in spinal surgery at UT Health Science Center of San Antonio. He received certification from the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery in 2004. In 2005, he was designated Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (FACOS). He was a member of many professional organizations; most recently appointed Stroke Program Medical Director at Laredo Medical Center and Adjunct Professor at University of the Incarnate Word. He contributed to many professional journals and participated in conferences around the world. His healing touch, professional manner, and commitment to patient service quality will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
Surviving him are his loving sons, Edward and Carl Estrada; his siblings, Mario Estrada, Javier Estrada, Julio Estrada, Martha E. Plut, and Miguel Estrada. He was preceded in passing by his parents, Mario Ignacio and Virginia Estrada-Martinez; and brother, Jose Alejandro Estrada.
