Diego A. Gutierrez, 80, entered into eternal rest Thursday, April 28, 2011.-
Mr. Gutierrez served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict where he earned the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.-After his return Mr. Gutierrez attended and graduated from Texas A & I College with a B.S. degree, and worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 22 years in the Plant and Quarantine Section.
Mr. Gutierrez, in 1991was named Man of the Year in Texas Agriculture by the Texas County Agriculture Agents Association for District 12 of the Texas Agriculture Extension Service.-He was awarded this honor because of his long time support and contributions to Webb and Zapata Counties.-Mr. Gutierrez was an active 4-H adult leader from 1973 to 1981.-He was a strong supporter of the 4-H youth program and 4-H horse shows.-He hosted educational field day seminars and donated of his time and efforts towards the Extension educational efforts.-He was a long time contributor to both the Laredo International Fair and Exposition and The Zapata County Fair.
After retirement Mr. Gutierrez along with his wife, operated both a registered Beefmaster and commercial cattle operation in both Webb and Zapata Counties.
Mr. Gutierrez was preceded in death by his wife Thelma R. Gutierrez; his parents Diego and Maria M. Gutierrez; brother Heberto Gutierrez, twin sister Graciela G. Barlow, sisters Rosalina G. Train, and Eva G. Villegas.
Mr. Gutierrez is survived by his son Lauro A. (Mary Lou) Gutierrez; grandchildren Lauro A. Gutierrez, Jr., Luis A. Gutierrez; and brother in law George F. Barlow.-He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family would like to thank Dr. Milton Haber and his staff for all the wonderful care they provided for so many years.-We would like to especially thank his caregivers over the years, Irma Vasquez, her daughter Yesina Ramirez and Raymundo C. Chavarria.
Visitation will be held Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels, 1410 Jacaman Rd. from 5 to 9 in the evening.-A Vigil will commence at 7 in the evening.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, May 2, 2011 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m.-Cortege will depart at 8:30 a.m. from Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels.
Interment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery,
