Diana Maria Lafon, age 96 passed away peacefully on the 24th of September 2011.
Diana was born in Laredo on the 2nd of February 1915 as the first born to Maria Merriweather Lafon and Louis A. Lafon. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Thelma and her brother Louis Jr.
Diana is survived by her sister, Josephine, her cousin Gustavo Pena of Brownsville and William Pena of Houston, cousin Marion Marmon of San Antonio.
She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was a descendant of Captain Tomas Sanchez, the founder of Laredo. She was a loyal member of the Pan American Round Table and of Delta Kappa Gamma. She also belonged to the Blessed Sacrament Parish. The Lafon family sold the Lafon Farm provided for 21 acres of land next to Sacred Heart Children's Home which are to be designated for the construction of the Maria Lafon Park by the city of Laredo.
She portrayed Martha Washington for the Society of Martha Washington in 1954.
Diana received a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics from Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas and she also received a Masters of Arts from Columbia University in New York City in 1940.
She taught Home Economics at the Laredo Junior College and later taught until her retirement at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California, where she was later bestowed as Instructor Emeritus in 1978.-She and her sister Josie enjoyed cooking and baking cakes, and even catered for the Laredo Airport and provided food service for Braniff Airlines.
