REV. DEACON MR. DAVID VARGAS
b. APRIL 15, 1945 – o. OCTOBER 26, 1996 – d. July 28, 2017

Rev. Deacon Mr. David Vargas, 72, was called home to the Heavenly Father on Friday, July 28, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. Deacon David was born to Mr. Cruz T. Vargas and Mrs. Concepcion Gomez Lopez in Crystal City, Texas on April 15, 1945. He grew up in Carrizo Springs, Texas until he left to serve his country in August of 1966 in the US Navy. He served in active duty for 4 years aboard both the USS Patrick Henry and USS Polk and subsequently transferred to the Naval Reserves where he retired as a Navy Chief in the mid 1990’s.

David met the love of his life in 1963, Romaldina “Romie”, a love that endured many blessings for over 50 years. Together, they shared not only a love for their family, but a love for their faith that led to his ordination to the Permanent Diaconate in October 26, 1996 alongside Rev. Deacon Miguel Vallarta his classmate at San Agustin Church (now Cathedral) with Rev. Bishop Rene H. Gracida. This marked the first time in the history of the Diocese of Corpus Christi that the ordination was held in Laredo, the Western Vicariate. He faithfully served the church in Laredo at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Defendor of the Bond for the Tribunal, Director of the Permanent Diaconate, Priest Retirement Board and Board President of the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. If the memory serves correctly, Deacon David baptized over 1,200 children, presided over countless funerals, weddings, quinceaneras, house blessings and many more traditions and sacraments in our faith as well as by being a 4th Degree member and Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus Council 10939 at his parish. He never denied the service of a blessing or a funeral to anyone. He wholeheartedly gave of himself to God’s church on earth.

He joins his parents in the eternal city of heaven: Cruz T. Vargas and Concepcion Gomez Lopez.

Deacon David is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 50 years of marriage, Romaldina R. Vargas; children: Elizabeth Ann (Juan Emilio) Lara, Kenny Vargas, Rebecca (Hector) Gualdarrama, Teresa Marie Vargas, Cristina Lee (Ricardo) Vargas-Cantu, Catherine Lynn Vargas; mom: Julia Vargas; grandchildren: Jesika D.
