Bertha Barrera

January 7, 1927 — July 1, 2020

Bertha Barrera, 93, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 01, 2020.

Originally from Benavides, Texas, Bertha, with her husband George, moved to Laredo in 1960. She was active in her children’s schooling at St. Peter’s School, often being the room mother. She participated in many civic organizations over the years, including The Does, Elysian Club, Catholic Daughters of America, St. Patrick’s Alter Society, and Tuesday Music Club. She and George enjoyed square dancing and traveling. Bertha was especially talented in baking and was known for her Pineapple Cake, whose recipe was published in the newspaper. She had a very generous spirit, often helping out those in need as demonstrated by her countless volunteer hours at the MH-MR facility and The Laredo Food Bank.  And close to her heart were her children and grandchildren, making sure to attend their many birthdays, recitals, and graduations. She will be greatly missed for her outgoing nature and for her wit. She left a legacy of love, charity, and care for humankind.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lorenzo and Estefana Carrillo; and her siblings, Raymundo Carrillo, Ricardo Carrillo, Odilia Gonzalez, and Ruben Carrillo.

Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 71 years, George T. Barrera; daughter, Imelda Herrera and grandson, Rene Herrera; son, Mario (Dolores) Barrera and granddaughters, Stephanie, Katherine, Frances, and Andrea Barrera; daughter, Rebecca (Anil) Singhal and grandchildren, Anjali, Valmiki, and Rakesh Singhal all of Thousand Oaks, CA; son, George (Sandra) Barrera and granddaughters, Shelby, Elizabeth, and Christina Barrera. She is further survived by her siblings, Leonor Garza of McAllen, TX and Rene Carrillo of Costa Rica; as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, other loved relatives, and friends.
