Berta Vidaurri Mayers
January 4, 1918 - December 13, 2015
Berta Vidaurri Mayers, affectionately known as "Granny," passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at the age of 97.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pablo Mayers, Sr.; her parents, Juan Manuel Vidaurri and Maria del Refugio Martinez Vidaurri; as well as her siblings, Guadalupe Vidaurri, Selinda V. Reyna, Abel Vidaurri, Laureano Vidaurri, Olga V. Gutierrez, Velia V. Maldonado, Josefina V. Valdez and Jose Roberto Vidaurri.
She is survived by her children, John Mayers, Pablo (Patti) Mayers, Jr., Virginia Mayers, Patricia Mayers and Anthony (Ruth) Mayers. Also left to cherish her memory are eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and her sister, Sylvia Vidaurri Gust, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Her determined spirit and genuine love of family will never be forgotten. Bertha was born into a pioneer Laredo family and remained in Laredo her entire life. She spent her early married life as a devoted wife and mother supporting her husband's farming and ranching endeavors, as well as raising their young children at the Mayers Ranch. Once her children were grown, she worked for LISD as a teacher's aide at Heights Elementary School, and she later transferred to the Child's Nutrition Program where she worked until retirement.
She enjoyed traveling with family to the East Coast and Alaska and looked forward to the family's annual Caribbean Christmas cruise.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ricardo Cigarroa, Dr. David Cruz, and her faithful caregiver, Aurora Sandoval.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapel, 719 Loring at Cortez from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; with a rosary at 5:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, December 21, 2015 at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church at 9:00 a.m. with Msgr. Alejandro Salazar officiating. Procession will depart the funeral home at 8:30 a.m.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Joseph Mayers, Jason Krug, Mario Perez, II, AJ Mayers, John Paul Mayers and William Joseph Mayers.
Honorary pallbearers will be her sons, John Mayers, Pablo Mayers, Jr. Anthony Mayers; and great grandsons, Andrew Barstow, Matthew Cox, Alex Garcia and Matthew Maziur.
Interment and Rite of Committal will be at the family plot in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
