ARTEMIO GREGORIO BARRERA
April 22, 1952- May 25, 2023
Our father, Artemio G. Barrera, passed away on May 25, 2023, after managing a short illness with strength and grace.
He is predeceased by his son Joey Barrera, his parents Juan Artemio and Esperanza Barrera, his mother Delia Mireles, and his sisters San Juanita Molano and Ana Torres.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rosamaria Barrera; daughters Sylvia (James III) Hein, Lisa Mayela (Andrew) Ramirez; grandsons Luis Gerardo Garcia and Andrew Mateo Ramirez; sisters Teresa (Ernesto+) Quintanilla, Julia (Bob) Wolk, Dora (Gilbert) Ramirez, and Dolores Canales; brother Juan Artemio Barrera Jr. (Silvia), and numerous nephews, nieces, fellow Cursillistas, and friends.
His studies at Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon forged his lifelong impeccable work ethic, which would serve him in his career as a residential and commercial contractor.
One of the people that greatly impacted his life was Padre Vladimir Manente who was a cherished leader of the Cursillo movement in Laredo. After living his Cursillo in 1996, our father became devoted to the movement. He served in the kitchen in countless Cursillos and looked forward to each retreat weekend he was privileged in assisting with, which he viewed as a great honor. Through his involvement, he established lasting friendships that fulfilled him throughout his life.
The enduring impression he made on us as a father is one that makes us feel truly fortunate to have been his daughters. He was quick to show affection and continually showed his love for us through words and actions. His wit was unmatched, as evidenced by the fact that so many of our familial inside jokes had been established and maintained throughout the years by our daddy.
An overarching theme in his life was service to his friends, and although – as is common in life – these friendships ebbed and flowed, his loyalty always remained to the network of friends he built through the years. The family would like to thank his two close friends, Pepe Salazar and Lupe Ulloa who helped him through his illness.
The family will be receiving condolences on Monday evening, May 29, 2023 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels & Cremation Services, 1410 Jacaman Rd.; where a Vigil for the Deceased and Rosary will commence at 7 p.m.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Tuesday morning, May 30, 2023 departing at 8:30 a.m. from Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9 a.m.
