ANNA LAURA GARZA
June 26, 1964- July 17, 2023
Anna Laura (Herrera) Garza, devoted mother, spouse, sibling, friend to all, joined our Lord in His heavenly kingdom on Monday, July 17, 2023, at the age of 59. While she was taken unexpectedly from this world, she was at peace with her life and her loved ones.
Anna Laura was fifth of seven children born to Ramon and Bertha Herrera in Laredo, Texas. As a child she attended Milton Elementary, Lamar Middle School and went to attend J.W. Nixon High School, as did the rest of her siblings and son, and graduated Class of 1982. She went on to study to get her degree in Elementary Education from Laredo State University class 1987. After graduation she went to work as a classroom teacher at Milton Elementary and then moved to the school’s librarian position after getting her certification.
She was a devoted Catholic and a very active member at San Martin De Porres Church, and was also part of the Schoenstatt movement where she participated in many prayer groups and functions. She had one son, David Martin Gonzales, who she loved with all her heart to many he was her world. Anna Laura was a devoted wife who had a deep love for her husband, Remigio Garza.
Anna Laura had many passions, she loved to go for endless drives around the city but most of all she had a passion for baking that she learned from her mother and passed on to her son. She also had a deep admiration for books. Anna Laura worked for LISD for 35 years all at C.L. Milton Elementary where for the last 30 years she has served as the schools Librarian where her love for the library was also unmatched. She fiercely worked with each student to succeed in the accelerated reader program. She went above and beyond for her Family Readings Nights year after year. Many of which became the talk of the school district. She also became notorious for her Dr. Suess events such as the Dr. Suess parade, Cat in the Hat celebration, and Grinch Week during the Fall semester. Anna Laura affectionately called “#1” will always be remembered as a hardworking mother, wife, sister, and Educator.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ramon F. Herrera, Sr and Bertha Herrera, and brother, Ramon (Raymond) Herrera
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Remigio Garza. Her beloved son; David (Gladys) Gonzales; siblings: Arturo (Janine) Herrera, Iris (Willie) Lopez, Maria Ingrid Herrera, Barbara Ida (Peter) Arredondo, Roberto Gerardo (Elizabeth) Herrera, she is further survived by her nieces and nephews and a multitude of devoted friends.
The family will be receiving condolences on Friday evening, July 28, 2023 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels & Cremation Services, 1410 Jacaman Rd.; where a Vigil for the Deceased and Rosary will commence at 7 p.m.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday morning, July 29, 2023 departing at 8:45 a.m. from Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels to San Martin de Porres Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9 a.m.
Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the family plot of the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
