Alvaro Rubio

September 21, 1938 — March 29, 2014

ALVARO ALFONSO RUBIO September 21, 1938 - March 29, 2014 Alvaro Alfonso Rubio, 75, of Laredo passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014. He was born in Laredo, TX on September 21, 1938, to the late Cecilia and Adolfo Rubio. He was also preceded in death by his siblings and in laws, Adela, Angel, Aurora & Pedro Cristan, Adelfa & Jose Hinojosa, Araceli, Adolfo Jr. & Armandina, and Abelardo & Margarita. Alvaro is survived by his sisters, Angelica Rubio, Alma Madrigal (Jorge); his brothers, Aguinaldo (Angelina) and Alberto (Veronica); and his brother in law, Enrique Paredes. Alvaro attended Raymond and Tirza Martin High School, and in 1959 enlisted in the United States Army. He served two tours of duty overseas as a Radio Communications Operator in Panama, Turkey and Vietnam. He also led the Burial Detail at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, from mid-1967 to mid-1968. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant in July 1968. He was married to, and is survived by his wife of 54 years, Irma Segovia Rubio. Alvaro was a dedicated rancher, who until recently regularly found time to maintain and upgrade the family ranch. He loved to work the land, tend to his cattle, hunt and just spend time enjoying the great outdoors. Whenever the opportunity presented itself, he also loved to cook for whoever was visiting the ranch. His legacy lives on in the improvements he made to the Rubio family ranch, "El Pescadito". Alvaro was a highly respected roofing contractor, beginning his career with South Texas Roofing in 1968 and later opening his own roofing and sheet metal fabrication shop. Local builders and architects always sought out "Poncho" or "Rubio" as they called him, for what was universally accepted as his unparalleled expertise, knowledge and craftsmanship. He was an exemplary son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, boss and friend. Alvaro is also survived by his four children; Alvaro, Jr.; Arnoldo (Elizabeth); Alonzo (Denise); and Andelia (Alejandro Leal), all of Laredo. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Christian and Chrystina; Arnoldo, Jr.; Alonzo, Jr., Adrian and Andrea; and Alexandra Leal. Finally, the entire Rubio family would like to publicly thank Dr. Ricardo Cigarroa and his entire staff for their excellent care of Alvaro these last couple of years. When he was very seriously ill last year, it was their skillful care, along with the staff of the LMC's ICU/Step Down Unit (in particular, R.N. Mario Galvan) that blessed the family with these precious extra months to spend with him. For that, we are eternally grateful. We would also like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ian Thompson (San Antonio, TX), Dr. Benson Huang and Dr. Robert Hudson. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapel, 719 Loring and Cortez. A Rosary and Vigil will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Funeral procession will depart on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. to Christ the King Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will then follow to the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
